Hyperhidrosis Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. This condition affects millions of people worldwide. While precise figures are not available, it is estimated that 2.8% of the general population is affected by hyperhidrosis. Without proper treatment, hyperhidrosis can have a great impact on the quality of life. Sweating hands, underarms, feet or face can give the wrong impression in business and personal situations. For example, it may seem that the person with hyperhidrosis is nervous or ill, when this is not the case. People with hyperhidrosis may have to wash more often, have clothes cleaned more often, and even use special pads to absorb excess perspiration. Also, excess sweating can damage the skin, promote infection and cause unpleasant odours. These outcomes are undesirable from both the medical and the social point of view. When sweating occurs over the entire body, it is known as generalized hyperhidrosis. When sweating occurs in certain places only, it is known as focal hyperhidrosis. In most cases, the cause of hyperhidrosis is unknown. This is known as primary hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis can also be caused by an underlying condition (e.g. endocrine disorders, menopause, obesity, nerve damage) and by some drugs although this is very uncommon. This is known as secondary hyperhidrosis. At Cutanius, we use our popular neurotransmitter modulator (BTTA) to successfully treat hyperhidrosis. Average duration of each treatment is 6 to 12 months, with the effects being apparent in 2 to 7 days after each session. |
