Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) involves the application of an inert compound (5-ALA) onto the skin surface, followed by the activation of this product using light of a specific wavelight.

The activated compound then goes to work within the skin cells, preferentially selecting either cells damaged by solar changes or those with abnormal cell turnover (e.g. superficial keratoses)

Although PDT was primarily developed to deal with solar damage, it is now used extensively worldwide for a variety of indications including :
- Uneven skin tone or blotchiness
- Rosacea and stubborn red blemishes
- Psoriasis
- Troublesome acne
- Enlarged skin pores & sebaceous gland hyperplasia
- Fine lines and poor skin texture ( as an augmentation of photorejuvenation )

Our clinic has introduced this service as an easier, more affordable option for clients with skin problems which are not of a severity to warrant the use of resurfacing lasers.

Not all clients will be suitable for PDT, and a pre-treatment consultation with our doctor is essential. Clients will also need to be aware that there is some down-time involved after treatment, and that some cases will require more than one session to achieve the desired outcome.
