Rosacea

This is a peculiar vascular skin condition which affects up to 6% of the adult population in our nation. It is more prevalent in females over 30 years of age with fair Caucasian skin, especially those with a positive family history.

Rosacea usually presents initially as flushing and blushing of the face. Other forms include lumpy papules, pustules or a lumpy red nose in males. Many sufferers may feel embarrassment or lost of self-confidence in social settings as a result. It is a condition which has a natural history of quiescent stages, interrupted by flare-ups which are usually triggered by stress, sun exposure/heat, spicy foods and alcohol.

There is a wide range of treatments available for rosacea, but no definitive cure. Avoidance of common triggers are the first step, followed by topical preparations. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) can be used to significantly reduce general redness, flushing and superficial vessels.
